Private Instruction & Ensemble Coaching

Private Lessons

I have a Master's Degree in Education, and have been teaching Private Lessons in Saxophone, Flute and Jazz Improvisation at all levels for more than 20 years. My students come every other week for a 55-minute lesson, or by appointment. I charge $80 per lesson. For more info, please email me through this site. If you have a young student who requires a shorter or weekly lesson, feel free to email me through this site for a list of other qualified teachers.

Ensemble Coaching

I led ensembles at the Jazzschool for 15 years, lead two of my own bands, and coach ensembles of all sizes. Just email me through this site to discuss your needs.

My teaching Philosophy

I aim to have every student leave every lesson feeling successful. I write a comprehensive review in each student's book at every lesson, clearly outlining important points which we have covered, and noting what to practice. I supplement lessons with handouts and CDs when appropriate, and am available for email consultation between lessons.

For beginners, I stress correct instrument technique, reading, phrasing and if desired, improvisation. Some lessons are devoted to preparation for upcoming auditions or concerts.

For older continuing players, I gear lessons to the student’s areas of interest. After addressing basic instrument technique, some lessons focus solely on improvisation, some on reading, and some on music they are currently working on or performing.
